Banadir provincial administration on Thursday issued a new directive that a $5 fine will be levied on those who do not wear face masks amid surge in Covid-19 cases in Somalia.

The directive comes after the regional authority in Mogadishu said on Wednesday wearing face masks was now mandatory and those who fail to comply with the regulation will be fined.

Mogadishu has been the hotspot hit by the novel coronavirus and so far registered 4504 cases against a national tally of 8713 cases nationwide. The health ministry asserted that 136 more cases were registered on Wednesday out of a sample size of 978.

The second wave of the pandemic made landfall as the number of deaths that succumbed to the coronavirus now stands at 327.
